- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Like our seasons here in New England, time marches quickly in the “green” industry. From our early bedding plants in late April through our robust fresh Christmas Trees in December, each calendar season produces many micro-seasons within it, so change like our weather is constant. In Our Farmstand: One of the pleasant constants at Gumps Farm regardless of the season is the presence of our resident artisan, Susan Newville whose country gifts and collectibles have graces our farmstand for several years. Mrs. Newville’s tastefully made offerings change with the seasons and are remarkably well priced. From garden themed ornaments, among other things in the spring to Christmas tree ornaments in the winter and all seasons in between, there is something for everyone in Susan’s own Tumblebrook Country Collectibles. In Spring: We kick off the spring season in style at Gumps Farm by catering to all of your planting and gardening needs. Our two greenhouses and our outside retail area are awash in a sea of color as we offer everything from annual and vegetable flats to specialty annual squares, geraniums, and hanging plants just to name a few. All our plants are produced with great care and attention by us from our greenhouse benches until the time we load them into your car for you. You will find our prices in relation to our quality to be unmatched in our immediate area. We also carry an ever changing selection of the areas best perennials and a counter book of nursery stock from two of New Englands finest tree farms to assist you in economically planning a breathtaking landscape at your home or office. From Memorial Day to Columbus Day we typically offer a good selection of palm trees and other assorted tropical plants, a real area of interest for us, from one of our three Florida suppliers. We will also take special orders from you for virtually any type of tropical tree you desire for your home or office. In Summer: As Spring gives way to late summer in June, we begin to integrate our fresh produce into the mix inside of our farmstand, as they begin to come in to season. Our featured products are the staples of the New England summertime meals; we also take pride in trying many varieties of produce that are not typically found at your local supermarket. In a normal growing season we like to grow multiple varieties of corn, both bi-color and white and usually 8-10 different varieties of tomato. We also import from reputable suppliers, fresh products that are either not native or not yet in season in our region, to extend the season. Throughout the summer we continue to update our selection of 2 gallon perennials bi-weekly and begin to incorporate jumbo annuals as fill-ins to replace plants in your landscape that Mother Nature has damaged or to make gardening heroes out of the spring procrastinator. In Autumn: As the days grow shorter and the shadows grow longer we continue our produce season well into October although most of the tender products are typically ended by the seasons first hard frost. After Labor Day, we begin to bring forward our own Gumps Farm grown hardy Belgian mums, fall asters, ornamental kale and cabbage, fall pansies, pumpkins, cut cornstalks, gourds and Indian corn, just to name a few! Fall is a great time of year at the farmstand and in New England in general and we try to capture the feel of it for our customers. We offer apples from native, local orchards, fresh native honey and our artisan crafter Susan Newville captures the season well with seasonally appropriate collectibles that are annually well received. Around the 25th of October we begin to wind it down for our annual break between Halloween and Thanksgiving to prepare for our metamorphosis into a beautiful full service Christmas shop. In Winter: Although the beauty of our growing crops, retail plants and swaying palms are no longer present, we have grown to become very proud of our farm during the Christmas season for what we do provide - an opportunity for our customers to purchase something that they typically would find unavailable at other venues; a truly fresh Christmas tree. While most local retailers are busy trying to sell early September-harvested Christmas trees that they purchase in bulk, we have utilized our “green” industry contacts and have developed a long standing relationship with a reputable Vermont Christmas tree farmer who provides us with fresh cut trees that are immediately loaded onto a truck for their journey to our farm to your family Christmas. Each tree is stood up and tagged once it arrives at Gumps with it’s harvested date, variety, height and price. Come early because we sell out completely every year. Our trees are priced very competitively considering their superiority. Christmas at Gumps farm is considered a one stop holiday decorating source providing wreaths of all types and sizes, garlands, swags, kissing balls and many other products too numerous to list. In addition our resident crafter, Susan Newville does a remarkable job of capturing the feel and the spirit of the season in our farmstand, providing a plethora of holiday decorating items as well as gifts alike. Santa also makes an annual pilgrimage to Gumps Farm, landing his sleigh in our back field during the first two weeks of December. Santa hands out candy canes and is happy to have his picture taken and take special Christmas orders from our smaller (and larger) patrons. |
